NASELS Cup: Year III Team Emerges Winner of the Competition

The three days football competition organised by the National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies (NASELS), Federal University Oye-Ekiti chapter has come to an end. The year III team emerged winner of the competition.

The football competition kicked off on Monday, the 16th of March and ended on Wednesday, the 18th of March. The competition is the first of its kind among departments in the university and was organized by the office of the sports director. According to Stephen Ezeoma, the sports director of the department, the competition aimed at discovering new talent at different levels and building a strong team in preparation for bigger competitions that are bound to come up on campus.

Year IV students of the department were unable to produce a team. Therefore, the competition was restricted to other levels and the level with the highest points won the competition.

On the first day, year II students were defeated by year I students with a 2-1 scoreline. On the second day of the competition, year III students lost to year II students also with a 2-1 shoreline. Ezeoma Stephen, a year III player, was able to score the first goal for his team in the first 20minutes. Enoch from year II scored an equalizer goal while Samuel’s last goal determined the fate of the match.

The final match between the year III and year I teams, was played on the 18th of March, 2020. The year III team defeated the year I team with a 5-1 scoreline.

During the first half, Samuel Okoro, a year III player, scored the first goal. Adebowale Godwin, who is also a year III player, scored the second goal. Okoro proceeded to score the third and fourth goals for his team while Adikpe Abraham’s last goal uped the year III goals to five. Busayo from the year I team scored a goal with a penalty kick.

Immediately after the match, Etim Sanyaolu, the social director of the department presented the winners with gold medals while the year II team was awarded silver medals.

Special recognitions were given to Samuel Chibueze as the highest goal scorer; Damilare Odumosu, the year III goalkeeper and Akinyemi Mayowa, the year II goalkeeper. The Sports director, Stephen Ezeoma, was specially recognized for organizing the competition.

Speaking with UCJ FUOYE, Samuel Chibueze expressed his utmost happiness towards the outcome of the match. He said “we are very excited to have won this match. We played the first game yesterday, though I wasn’t around, I went with the school team to play in EKSU. When I came back, I was told the result was 2-1. I said for us to win this cup, we need to score about three goals upwards. So I just had to put myself into more training yesterday night when I got back and here we are, we won the game”.

Akinleye Isaiah, the captain of the year III team also expressed his happiness. He said “we are happy because it was pretty hard yesterday. We tried so much and we won with determination”.
