The Faculty of Science, Federal University Oye Ekiti has resumed the faculty Dean’s Cup competition on Tuesday, January 25th, 2022 at the university’s Sports Complex.

The competition resumed with two matches played. The department of Physics faced the Geology department while the department of Computer Science and Geophysics clashed.

After both teams lost chances, the department of Geology eventually had the first goal during the first half of the game as John Gideon found the back of the net.

During the second half, Physics’ striker, Fatoyinbo Eniola was able to convert a chance after they were awarded a penalty.

In the 30th minute of the second half, Geology pulled another goal after Oluwatobiloba, one of their key men converted a free-kick from a 20 yards distance.

Speaking to UCJ FUOYE, Dosu Kingsley, a 400 level student who captains the Physics side said, “it was a great match and it was tough as expected but I give kudos to my teammates because we had a one-day training just before the game and we performed well.

He noted that the first goal scored against them is controversial because the linesman raised his flag up signifying offside but the referee made his decision.

“We also suffered from a shortage of key players due to them being absent. I believe we have learned and we will come back stronger,” he said.

The second match between the department of Computer Science and Geophysics saw Geophysics emerge victorious with 2 goals to 1.

Both teams created chances and were able to keep each other at bay in the first half of the match.

The first goal of the match came as a penalty in the second half of the game in favour of the Geophysics department after a Computer Science defender carried the ball with his hand right inside the box.

Charlie, Geophysics’ striker scored from the penalty spot and Computer Science replied through Thunder, who produced a header assist for Adeyanju Paul who in turn slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Eight minutes to the end of the game, Geophysics scored their second goal which ensured they took all three points.

The president of the Faculty of Science, Awopeju Moses speaking to our reporter said, “the league is already in the halfway stage and this is the first time in history that the annual football competition is being played as a league.

“It was a knockout competition before but we decided that since the competition is to foster peace and love between each department of the faculty it should be played as a league so that each department would have the chance of playing against the other nine departments.”

He assured there would be no news of cheating and other malpractices as seen in the previous editions of the game.

The president also called on all students of the faculty to head to the field and support their departmental teams whenever they have a match because it would be a source of motivation for the players.

“I hope the competition continues smoothly. In one month’s time, the competition should be over,” he concluded.
