The governing council of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti appointed Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina as the new Vice Chancellor of the university on Wednesday, 6th January, 2021.
This was made known in Abuja after a 2-day meeting of the university’s governing council.
The appointment was made due to the imminent expiration of the current Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode Soremekun’s tenure which comes up in February 2021.
Professor Fasina, who served as the adminstrative deputy Vice Chancellor of the Soremekun administration, received the congratulatory message in Abuja. This was announced by the university’s Pro Chancellor, Dr. Mohammed Lawan Yahuza, after a long selection process that started last year.
According to the Pro Chancellor, the decision has brought “an end to a very long and tortuous process of getting a new Vice Chancellor for FUOYE”.
He stressed the fact that the appointment should stop all the rancour and resentment the process has brought on campus, advising all applicants to “sheath their swords and join the new Vice Chancellor to build the university”.
Also, Dr. Yahuza commended the efforts of the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Soremekun, for enduring difficult situations.
He said, “you are going out with your confidence and your head high up, I congratulate you”.
After presenting Professor Fasina with the appointment letter in the presence of the council members and the external consultant, Alhaji Sule Dauda, Dr. Yahuza appreciated the governing council members for their “commitment, doggedness and thoroughness”.
The Federal University Oye-Ekiti was founded in 2011 along with eight other universities by the Goodluck Jonathan led administration. The University has two campuses in Oye Ekiti and Ikole Ekiti. Chinedu Ostadinma Nebo served as the pioneer Vice Chancellor while Professional Soremekun was appointed in 2016 by the current president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.
