In light of the reaction of the students of Federal University Oye-Ekiti regarding the cut-throat increment in departmental and faculty fees, the Federal University Oye-Ekiti Students’ Union Government has reached a consensus from the Joint Consultative Forum meeting held on the 4th of March, 2023.
This was made known in a memo signed by the FUOYESUG President, Comr. Ajayi Dotun, and the Secretary, Comr. Oyebiyi Ridwan.
“Accordingly, the forum has met in line with the constitution on the 4th of March, 2023 where issues on the regulation of departmental associations’ due and some other persisting issues which are of interest to the Union were discussed”, the memo reads.
The Forum inferred that “the maximum amount payable as department association due per session by new students (FRESHERS) is four thousand naira only (₦4,000)”, and returning students (STAYLITES) “three thousand naira only (₦3,000)”.
It also emphasized that each department is free to set its fee as they deem fit, however, it must “not exceed four thousand naira (₦4000) for new students and three thousand (₦3000) for returning students”.
The forum further resolved that payments or activities which do not fall in line with the aforesaid amounts “should be made OPTIONAL” and “should be clearly stated in the departmental memo as OPTIONAL”.
They came to terms that not more than 10% of any department/faculty association total should be used to compensate their departmental or faculty hierarchies. They further agreed to sanction appropriately, any department or faculty association found defiant of the above resolution.
The forum implores students who have overpaid before now to seek a refund.
“Students who have been overcharged by their departmental association before now should seek refund immediately from their departmental association and report any erring department,” the memo reads.
It was also agreed that no department or faculty must have members of staff as signatories to its association accounts as they are students’ associations and not meant for staff members.
Furthermore, it was emphasised that a joint task force committee would be set up to ensure strict compliance with the resolutions and take severe actions against erring associations, stressing that the resolution becomes effective immediately.
