Six FUOYE Students Bag UNESCO Scholarship

Six students of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti have been awarded scholarships by the UNESCO International Centre for Biotechnology at the Nigerian National Merit Award Secretariat, Abuja, on April 1st, 2022. 

UNESCO International Centre for Biotechnology is an arm of the United Nations and in its bid to promote scientific discovery among university students across the world, it called for scholarship applications from eligible students last year. 

The scholarship opportunity was opened to Bachelor of Science (BSc), Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) holders all over the world and twelve FUOYE students all from the department of Biochemistry registered for the opportunity around the 4th of November, 2021.

The students include Oluwaseun Aletile, David Oyerinde, Bunkumi Odukoya, Oluwaseun Ajayi, Eniola Alabi and Temidayo Olofinlade are all 400 level students of the Department of Biochemistry.

Aletile Oluwaseun Newton while speaking with UCJ FUOYE revealed that he is a happy man, having emerged a beneficiary of the scholarship.

“I was so happy because I was not really expecting it because it is a worldwide scholarship. I am surprised that six students from FUOYE were picked out of 10 that were selected across the country,” he said.

He also said the opportunity would boost his morale academically and thanked the organizers.

Olofinlade Temidayo Blessing while speaking with UCJ FUOYE said she is absolutely grateful to the organizers for bringing up this kind of opportunity. 

The elated Oluwaseun Aletile was also grateful as he believes FUOYE served as a good platform for the scholarship award as he got informed about the scholarship opportunity from the department.

Another successful applicant, Oluwaseun Ajayi could not contain her joy as she was also enlisted for the scholarship award. 

“I was excited and at the same time scared because it was too good to be real. I was even more excited when I got to know that FUOYE had six winners out of the ten selected applicants in Nigeria,” she revealed.

She further stated how the scholarship will lessen her financial burden, especially as a final year student in school.

“Also, it will help me to focus on the next phase of my life,” she added

Eniola Alabi, who is also part of the awardees expressed her thoughts. She said she was “grateful”. She added that she will make good use of the scholarship fund as it will assist her in meeting up with important school expenses.

Each successful applicant will receive an award for one academic year towards tuition fees, accommodation, books and living expenses.
