On Friday, 12th of November, 2021, the Union of Campus Journalists, Federal University Oye-Ekiti held its induction ceremony for new members of the Union. Alongside the induction, was a training exercise for all members of the uniion.
The event was held at the Faculty of Arts Pavilion, Phase 1. It commenced at exactly 11: 21 am with an opening prayer from Gbenga Daniels, one of the new members.
The event had in attendance, both new and old members of the Union. After the opening prayer, a brief introductory speech was said by the Editor-in-Chief of the union, Muktar Balogun.
While speaking, he welcomed the new members of the union and admonished them to do what they have come to do wholeheartedly.
An introduction tour was done from the executives to the old and new members of the union which was anchored by the Graphics Designer 1 of the Union, Omoniyi Faith.
The Guest Speaker, Ayomide Agbaje, while speaking with the members of the union, explained his campus journalism sojourn to them. He congratulated the new members of the union on the bold step they have taken to become official members of UCJ FUOYE.
During his speech, he took the members through a wonderful ride of the “Nuts and Bolts of Writing and Editing in Journalism.”
“Journalism is not a haphazard process as it involves a series of processes which includes editing, fact-checking, having multiple and verifiable sources, as well as interviews —asking the right questions,” he asserted.
To conclude his speech, the guest speaker advised the members to expose themselves to opportunities as there are varieties of it in the mainstream media.
He admonished them to be dutiful by showing up for meetings, being responsible and showing passion about being a student journalist because of the exposure it brings which includes having their bylines on platforms, getting awards, and monetary benefits.
After the speech given by Ayomide Agbaje, the induction ceremony commenced for all new members. The oath-taking and press prayer was moderated by the General Secretary of the Union, Precious Ewuji. After, the press creed, which was done by the new members was moderated by the Public Relations Officer 1 of the union, Oladele Bello.
The Editor-in-chief, Muktar Balogun gave a piece of brief advice to the new members, to be responsible members following their induction and avail themselves of learning upon being a legal member. He affirms his belief in them and wishes them good luck.
The president of the union, Helena Idiovo officially welcomed the new members and apologized on behalf of Dr. Harry and Adejumo Kabir, a journalist with Humangle who were unable to make it to the ceremony due to an unavoidable circumstances The president presented a gift and appreciated the guest speaker, Mr. Agbaje Ayomide for his time and interesting speech.
After this, new sub-editors were selected from the old members. The editors who were assigned are Oladele Bello, Taiwo Babatunde, Faith Omoniyi, Precious Ewuji, Sodunke Samuel, Okikiola Oladipo, and Sunday Awosoro.
Helena Idiovo reminds the new members of their primary assignment which is sourcing new happenings.
The ceremony came to an end with refreshments and the taking of photographs.
At exactly 1:05 pm, the ceremony came to an end with a closing prayer from the President.
